Wheeled Armoured Vehicles

It has become customary for wheeled armoured vehicles to attempt to incorporate commercially available driveline components such as engines and transmissions, thereby keeping development costs to a minimum.

Increasingly the need arises to make these commercial components fit into envelopes designed for unique defence purposes, often in different configuration to those envisaged by ‘commercial’ component designers. David Brown has the expertise and experience to produce the bespoke gearboxes necessary to complete unusually configured drive-lines or provide final drives, transfer boxes and other intermediate solutions to match commercial components to actual operating needs.

MRAV Transmission

It has become customary for wheeled armoured vehicles to incorporate commercially available drive-line components such as engines and transmissions, thereby keeping development costs to a minimum. The need arises, however to make these commercial components fit into envelopes designed for unique defence purposes, often in different configurations to those envisaged by the component designers.

David Brown plays a pivotal role in an important collaborative international project to supply a modular range of vehicles to fulfil a wide variety of functions: the MRAV Multi Role Armoured Vehicle, a 30 tonne 8 wheel armoured car under development for UK, Germany and the Netherlands. David Brown has built an angle gearbox connecting through 90º the engine and laterally mounted transmission and offering the best technical solution based on knowledge of, and empathy with, armoured vehicle technology.

US Armoured Support Vehicle (ASV)– Transfer Box

The TMLS designed M1117 ASV fills a capability gap between larger armoured vehicles and equivalent smaller bolt on armour type platforms, providing the required mix of crew protection combined with speed and agility. The design inevitably leads to some difficult design and space issues.

The ASV configuration has become the support vehicle of choice in recent Middle Eastern conflicts. Working in hot, harsh climates, the 4x4 driveline cannot accept any compromise when working triple shifts through the day and night in a combat environment. David Brown, working closely with Cadillac-Gage, developed a unique solution to ensure the driveline was fully optimised. The return is demonstrated over and again, with complete driveline reliability, even with intensive mission use.
